Wrecks at Risk is an interdisciplinary research project dedicated to safeguarding the shipwrecks of Egypt’s Red Sea.
These globally significant sites are under increasing threat from unregulated recreational diving, looting, and natural deterioration, placing both their cultural value and their long-term economic contribution to dive tourism at risk. The project is a collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and Alexandria University to document vulnerable wrecks using digital photogrammetry, build capacity through training, and co-create sustainable management strategies. By combining archaeological research, digital innovation, and responsible tourism practice, Wrecks at Risk aims to protect this irreplaceable underwater heritage while ensuring it continues to benefit present and future generations.
Wrecks at Risk is part of HFF SWaN (the Honor Frost Foundation Sustainable Wrecks Network)
