We are excited to share new Wrecks at Risk research on one of the Red Sea’s most iconic dive sites — the SS Thistlegorm – has just been published in the Heritage Jounral. In the paper, Wrecks at Risk team members, Simon Brown and Jon Henderson talk about how we can use photo archives and photogrammetry to track how the wreck is changing over time — from natural deterioration to the impact of thousands of divers every year. If you’re interested in shipwrecks, diving, digital archaeology, or heritage management, it’s free to read.

The repeat surveys in 2017 and 2022 were carried out with the Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology.  The work highlights why digital recording and long-term monitoring – the central tenets of Wrecks at Risk – are essential for protecting underwater cultural heritage.
